  Hands-on Portrait Photography Group Workshop

  If you would like to expand your camera expertise into the realm of portrait work and photo compositing, this group is for you.

  Pre-Requisites:

  • A thorough knowledge of your camera settings is necessary for this group.
  • Attendees must agree to submit images for a critique session (via Zoom) open to the entire club one week after the meeting.

  We will be enlisting the services of various types of models to help us orchestrate various effects and various poses. Also, we will be incorporating the use of costumes and props and exploring various types of lighting patterns in order to achieve creative and imaginative results.

  The workshop will also include instruction on the use of strobes and off-camera flash, both in the studio and on location.

  Sessions will be limited to 6 photographers per session and it will be on a first come - first serve basis. If the session is full, you may join the waitlist. Workshop sessions will be held monthly.

  The group will meet in Lakewood Ranch. The address will be provided in your registration confirmation email.

  Submit up to three photos each month to be included in a slide presentation that will be shown at this month's General Meeting and on the club's YouTube channel.  Photos can be about any subject.

  Submit Share Your Work images from your computer. 

  Submit Share Your work images from your phone or tablet.

  Any submissions received late will automatically be carried over to the following month.

  Registration is not required. Just click on the link above to submit your photos.
  

  Each member is allowed to send up to 3 photos and/or a short video each month. Those photos and/or video can be on any subject as this is a great way to let other members see what kind of photography interests you, and what you have been shooting during the past month.
  

  Please try to adjust your photos to at least 1920 pixels on the horizontal edge, if you can. If you are not sure how to do that just send them anyway. If there is a problem with their size, Dave Kurshan will let you know and walk you through the process of how to resize your photos.

  Introduction: While many of our members are still away from Florida—whether enjoying time with family and friends or traveling elsewhere—we encourage everyone to keep their creative momentum going! This month’s photographic challenge, “Capture * Catch * Create,” is the perfect way to continue exploring your skills and having fun behind the lens. Images may be taken anywhere during the month of November. 

  When:  Saturday, November 1^st through Sunday, November 30^th  

  Where: Wherever you are at home, traveling throughout North America or elsewhere across the globe. 

  Registration: You are not required to register for this “on-your-own" field trip.  However, to get the most out of it, please register for the post event Zoom meeting.  See details about the Post Field Trip Zoom Meeting below. 

  Background:  November is a busy month, highlighted by Election Day, Veterans Day and ending with Thanksgiving, where people’s focus tends to be around family and food, particularly “Turkey Day” feasts.  These special times offer many opportunities for photographers to expand their skills, creating captivating posed or candid images of family members or friends and still-life photos of the foods they will be sharing. 

   Upload: Up to five (5) of your most interesting, colorful and/or creative photos on or before Friday, December 5^th by clicking on "Submit Field Trip Photos" link. 

  Post Field Trip Zoom Meeting: Toward the end of November, you will receive a separate email inviting you to participate in a Zoom meeting to review and discuss the “Family & Food” photos which have been uploaded.  The Zoom meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11^th at 6:30 PM. This email will provide a link to register and confirm the date and time of the Zoom meeting. 

  Suggested Equipment: 

  • Camera: Mirrorless, DSLR, or Cellphone 

  • Lenses: 14-30 mm wide angle and/or 24-105 mm zoom or fixed focal length; as some of your shots are likely to be indoors when standing back from your subjects may be challenging or even impossible. 

  • Flash (Optional): Built-in or on-camera flash to illuminate subjects or scenes where the ambient lighting may not be sufficient or where fill light is desired in your subject.  

  • Tripod and either a Manual or Remote Shutter Release (Optional): To eliminate potential camera shake and enable you to take sharp still-life images, particularly when a longer exposure time may be desired.  

  • Extra Batteries and Memory Cards: Never miss an opportunity.

  Introduction: While many of our members are still away from Florida—whether enjoying Thanksgiving with family and friends or traveling elsewhere—we encourage everyone to keep their creative momentum going! This month’s photographic challenge, “Capture * Catch * Create” is the perfect way to continue exploring your skills and having fun behind the lens. Images may be taken anywhere during the month of November. 

  When:  Monday, December 1^st through Wednesday, December 31^st  

  Where: Wherever you are at home, traveling throughout North America or elsewhere across the globe. 

  Registration: You are not required to register for this “on-your-own" field trip. However, to get the most out of it please register for the post event Zoom meeting.  See details about the Post Field Trip Zoom Meeting below. 

  Upload: Up to five (5) of your most interesting, colorful and/or creative photos on or before Friday, January 9^th by clicking on Submit Field Trip Photos link. 

  Post Field Trip Zoom Meeting: Toward the end of December, you will receive a separate email inviting you to participate in a Zoom meeting to review and discuss the Holiday Lights & Decorations photos which have been uploaded. The Zoom meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13^th at 6:30 PM. This email will provide a link to register and confirm the date and time of the Zoom meeting. 

  Background: Throughout December, people across the country, and around the world, celebrate their religious traditions (Hindus’ Bodhi Day on the 8^th, Jews’ Hanukkah from the 14^th thru the 22^nd, Christians’ Christmas on the 25^th, and African Americans’ Kwanza from the 26^th thru January 1^st).  In parallel, the season has many secular overtones, as well. 

   Two common threads for all these groups are both subtle and magnificent displays of lights and other decorations.  The Sarasota, Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch areas are ablaze with Christmas and Holiday lights … from University Town Center to city and local community centers, parades, public parks, botanical gardens, waterfronts, area zoos and any number of local neighborhoods.  Here are a several local areas known for their dynamic holiday displays: 

   Sarasota 

  • Cedar Hallow Neighborhood: Known for its intricate and over-the-top displays, with lights on from 5:30 PM to 1 AM.  

  • Colonial Gables Neighborhood: Residents create elaborate displays for a free, neighborhood-wide experience. 

  • University Town Center: Features over four million lights. 

  • St. Armands Circle: A popular spot to stroll and see holiday decorations.  

   Bradenton 

  • Hunsader Farms: Hosts an annual Country Christmas with over 300,000 lights, along with hayrides and train rides (paid). 

  • Bayshore Gardens: A neighborhood that goes all out with holiday lights. 

  • Riverview Boulevard: Another neighborhood known for its impressive light displays. 

  • Lakewood Ranch and University Park: These master-planned communities are also recognized for their holiday lights. 

  • Palmetto: The city of Palmetto has several neighborhoods with notable light displays. 

  • Parrish: Another area with residents who decorate extensively for the holidays. 

   Creatively and successfully photographing the nearly limitless number of multi-colored light displays can be challenging … but can also help you to improve your nighttime shooting skills.  

   Suggested Equipment: 

  • Camera: Mirrorless, DSLR, or Cellphone 

  • Lenses:  14-30 mm wide angle and/or 24-105 mm zoom or fixed focal length  

  • Tripod and either a Manual or Remote Shutter Release: To eliminate camerashake and enable you to take sharp photos often requiring slightly longer exposure times. 

  • Extra Batteries and Memory Cards:  Never miss an opportunity.

  • The Videography Group's purpose is to educate members in the art of videography for the purpose of complementing still images or producing stand alone videos to document an event or occasion. No previous training is necessary.
  • The Videography Meetings involve presentations on some aspect of Videography that will assist members to enhance their skills at planning, producing and editing videos. All skill levels are welcome.
  • Short videos filmed by participants are presented and critiqued to help with the learning process. Equipment information and techniques are shared and a very informal and helpful environment lends to helping everyone improve their skill level

  You're invited to see your fellow club member's photos during this Zoom meeting.  All photos were taken during a November's Holiday Lights & Decorations on-your-own Capture * Catch * Create Field Trip 

  Whether or not you uploaded any images for this on-your-own field trip ... or possibly didn't participate ... you are welcome to join the meeting during which those who did submit images will share and discuss each of them.

  Please make sure to title your photos (First Name, Last Name and image Sequence Number starting with "1") and include your watermark if you use one.  

  Your photos should be a maximum of 3820 pixels on the long side and no more than 5MB.

  We will be reviewing:

  • Each uploaded photo
  • Where the photo was taken
  • Camera settings
  • Post processing
  • Challenges in creating the image or in post-processing
  • How those challenges were overcome
  • Other thoughts from the maker photographer
