  Downtown at Night Photography Shooting Tips 

  When shooting Downtown Tampa at night, think tripod-first. Long exposures (5–30 seconds) will let you smooth the Hillsborough River, turn traffic into light trails, and pull rich color out of the skyline—use a low ISO (64–100) and stop down to f/8–f/11 for sharp city lights. A remote release or 2-second timer helps avoid camera shake, and turning off image stabilization while on a tripod can improve sharpness. Watch highlights closely—streetlights and signage can blow out fast—so don’t be afraid to underexpose slightly and lift shadows later. 

  HDR (High Dynamic Range) can be especially effective around bridges and river reflections where bright lights and dark water collide. Bracket 3–5 frames (±2 EV is a good start) and keep your framing locked to avoid ghosting from moving boats or cars. If you prefer a more natural look, try blending exposures manually later rather than pushing HDR too far. Finally, experiment: mix classic long exposures with a few handheld shots at higher ISO for people, details, and candid moments—the contrast will give your final set more visual variety. 

  Weather Contingency: In the case of inclement weather, we will notify everyone that is registered by 9:00 AM on Friday, February 13.

• Venice Pier-Night Photography SIG Event

  Join us for another special Night Photography SIG outing on February 15 at the Venice Pier, where we’ll be aiming for a striking and very specific shot — capturing the sunset perfectly framed between the pier’s legs as it sets.

  This alignment doesn’t happen often, making it a great opportunity to plan, compose, and execute a memorable image. Before sunset, capture the waning moon composition over the pier. After sunset, we’ll stay on to photograph the pier at night, experimenting with long exposures, silhouettes, reflections, and changing light.

  Note:

  Dono with Johnson PhotoImaging will be hosting a “Sunset Under the Pier” event the night before, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, with sunset at 6:21 PM. If you can’t attend Sunday or desire to attend both evenings, you’ll have two unique opportunities!

  Hands-on Portrait Photography/Compositing Group Workshop

  If you are an experienced photographer and would like to expand your camera expertise into the realm of portrait work and photo compositing, this group is for you.

  January Theme: Crimson Muse

  It is going to be a Valentine’s Day themed shoot so we are going to have a sexy model all dressed up for Valentine’s Day. 

  Pre-Requisites:

  1. Bring at least one theme-related prop to create the vision for your unique image. For example, a bouquet of roses, heart shaped balloons, heart shaped candy, a bottle of champagne and glasses, rose petals to scatter, old books, or a feather boa.  
  2. Attendees must agree to submit images for a critique session (via Zoom) open to the entire club one week after the meeting.
  3. Registrants must come prepared with the following camera skills and settings. These items are essential for a smooth experience and to ensure everyone gets the most out of the session.

  Required Camera Skills:

  • Adjusting ISO (100-400 recommended with strobes)
  • Setting Shutter Speed and staying within flash sync speed (1/160 to 1/250)
  • Changing Aperture/F-stop for portraits (f/2.8-f/4 for shallow depth, f/5.6-f/8 for groups)
  • Using Manual Exposure mode with studio lighting
  • Toggling Auto ISO on/off
  • Selecting AF-S/One Shot for portraits
  • Choosing a single focus point
  • Enabling/disabling Live View and zooming in to fine-tune focus
  • Finding your low-light AF assist setting
  • Turning OFF silent/electronic shutter when using strobes

  Registrants Should Bring With Them:

  • Extra charged batteries
  • An empty memory card
  • A Portrait-friendly lens (50mm, 85mm, 24-70mm, or any lens 90mm or below)
  • A lens cloth

  Optional but Helpful:

  • Shoot in RAW
  • Know how tadjust White Balance (Kelvin or Custom)
  • Understand highlight warnings ("blinkies")
  • Use grid lines for composition

  
  

  We will be enlisting the services of various types of models to help us orchestrate various effects and various poses. Also, we will be incorporating the use of costumes and props and exploring various types of lighting patterns in order to achieve creative and imaginative results.

  The workshop will also include instruction on the use of strobes and off-camera flash, both in the studio and on location.

  Sessions will be limited to 4 members (plus the 3 instructors) per session and it will be on a first come - first serve basis. If the session is full, you may join the waitlist. Workshop sessions will be held monthly

  -*9 on February 25 via Zoom.

  Lakewood Ranch Community Campout

  NOTE TIME

  When:  Saturday, February 21^st, 2026 5:00 PM EST 

  Where:  Greenbrook Adventure Park located at 13010 Adventure Pl, Bradenton, Fl 34202 

  Event Details:  This annual Lakewood Ranch Community Campout will be at Greenbrook Adventure Park on February 21^st. The attendees will begin setting up at 3:00 PM and should be all set up by 5:00 PM. The Campout ends the following morning.

  LWRDPC members have been invited to participate as photographers for this event. This is a great opportunity to get some practice in “street photography" of families and children enjoying time together during a local event, as well as providing a benefit to the community.

  Afterwards, you’ll be asked to provide a few of your digital photographs to the LWR Community Activities and Events group. It is recommended that you include your signature watermark on your submitted photos as they may be published through the Community Activities and Events Group Media sites. 

  As a photographer for the event, you should arrive between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM and stay until approximately 8:00 PM. You can arrive earlier than 5:00 PM, if you choose to photograph the tents being set up. 

  When you arrive, you’ll need to check in at the Community Activities Tent. Please wear your LWRDPC ID lanyard indicating that you are an event photographer. Included in this event: a campfire perfect for s’mores, a family friendly movie under the stars, live music by Justin Laymen, food truck and more.  

  Suggested Equipment:

  * 24-70mm and/or 70-300mm lens or equivalents

  Submit up to three photos each month to be included in a slide presentation that will be shown at the next General Meeting and on the club's SmugMug site.  Photos can be about any subject.

  Submit Share Your Work images from your computer.

  Any submissions received late will automatically be carried over to the following month.

  Registration is not required. Just click on the link above to submit your photos.
  

  Each member is allowed to send up to 3 photos and/or a short video each month. Those photos and/or video can be on any subject as this is a great way to let other members see what kind of photography interests you, and what you have been shooting during the past month.
  

  Please try to adjust your photos to at least 1920 pixels on the horizontal edge, if you can. If you are not sure how to do that just send them anyway. If there is a problem with their size, Dave Kurshan will let you know and walk you through the process of how to resize your photos.

  Venice Rookery

  When:  Sunday, March 8th, 2025 - 8:30 AM - Noon

  Where:  The Rookery is located on Annex Road which is immediately to the East of the R. L. Anderson Administrative Center (which many people call South County Administrative Center and houses the Sarasota County Tax Office), 4000 S. Tamiami Highway, Venice. Continue beyond the Tax Office's parking lots.

  What: The Venice Rookery hosts roosting birds year-round and nesting birds from late winter through spring.  While six notable bird species can typically be seen include: Great Blue Herons, White Ibis, Great Egrets, Anhingas, Double-crested Cormorants, and Black-crowned Night Herons; Green Herons, Tricolored Herons, Cattle Egrets, Purple Gallinules and smaller birds such as Common Yellowthroats can also be seen courting, nesting, incubating their eggs and raising chicks.  It is a bird photographer’s “must-visit”!

  Graham Smith Bio 

  Graham worked 30 years with mainframe & PCs of which over 10 years on numerous Dept of Defense (NRO, CIA, NSA) installing, calibrating, repair of table imaging scanners in coordination with geospatial analysis & intelligence gathering of images taken in outer space.

  While stationed overseas, extensive traveling through UK I was able to photograph ecclesiastic old monasteries, abbeys, with stained glass windows as well as landscape photography.

  In late 1990s, started photography of one my loves (road racing) 
  As a contributing photographer for AFP (Agence France Presse) Traveling to Canada, New York, Connecticut, Ohio Georgia & Florida covering IMSA, Indy Grand-Am formats. This past March was my 27thyear covering the 12 Hours of Sebring, basically a 4-day event.

  In 2018, I accepted an offer to cover my first rocket launch (SpaceX Telstar 19). Since that launch, I’ve covered over 165 launches of SpaceX, Blue Origin, ULA (Atlas& Vulcan), & Artemis at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida & Wallops Island in Viriginia.

  Join us for an adventure-filled photography field trip to Southwest Florida, where we ’ll mix great local fare, iconic Everglades locations, and plenty of opportunities to shoot—day and night.

  This trip is designed to be flexible and fun, with options for every shooting style, from landscapes and wildlife to night and street photography. We ’ll travel together at times, split into smaller groups when it makes sense, and leave room for spontaneous discoveries along the way. Final logistics, meeting times, and exact locations will follow.

  We have reached the maximum group size for the boat tour of 12.

  • Visit the historic Smallwood Store, followed by dinner at HaVannA Café—both located in Chokoloskee. We are coordinating with several boat tour companies to arrange a bird rookery and sunset tour that evening.

  • Optional breakfast, followed by a few additional stops on the way home, including:
  • Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center, Everglades City
  • Ten Thousand Islands Marsh Trail (17 miles west)
