Topic: Simple Truths To Building A Strong Photography Portfolio

Having a strong and engaging portfolio is crucial in the world of photography. It is your primary tool for showing your abilities, style, and unique approach to making photos.

    1. Focus on the type of imagery that you believe will make you stand out from the competition.
    2. A good portfolio is not a mishmash of photos taken over a couple of years and cobbled together.
    3. Take your time, your portfolio should show consistency from image to image and show of your style.
    4. When you are photographing, take as many different approaches to the subject as you can.

    • 6:00 p.m. — Dinner at Sharky’s (Optional) We have reservations for 12 and will maintain a waitlist. Please register by August 7 so we can try to secure additional seating if needed.
    • 8:08pm - Sunset
    • 9:28pm - Moonset--it'll be a sliver!
    • 9:30pm - The Milky Way core will be visible in the S-SW sky beginning around 9:30 - until after midnight. The darker the sky, the better the visibility. Sharky's closes at 11pm; the pier is open 24/7. Stay as long as you wish.

Directions and Parking: The Venice Pier and Sharky's on the Pier are located at 1600 Harbor Drive South, Venice. There is a large, free parking lot.

    Recommended Equipment:

    • Camera (Mirrorless, DSLR or Cellphone)

    • Moderately wide-angle lens for sunset and outdoor photos
    • The moon will be a sliver - a zoom will be helpful
    • Wide-angle lens for the Milky Way
    • Tripod
    • Graduated ND or polarizing filters for sunset (optional)
    • Late summer and late afternoons are prime for thunderstorms so be prepared!

    Shooting Tips:

    Sunset (8:08pm) and Blue Hour

    • Arrive early to scout compositions featuring the pier, beach, water and silhouettes.
    • Start around ISO 64–100, f/8–f/11, and adjust shutter speed as the light changes.
    • Bracket exposures when the sky is much brighter than the foreground.
    • Continue shooting for 20–30 minutes after sunset—the richest color may occur during blue hour.
    • A graduated ND filter may help balance the sky and foreground. A polarizer can reduce reflections but may create uneven skies with very wide lenses.

    Crescent Moon (sets 9:28pm)

    • The moon will be a very thin sliver, so a 200–600mm lens will make it more visible.
    • Try approximately 1/125–1/500 second, f/6.3–f/8 and Auto ISO.
    • Include the moon with the pier or people rather than photographing it alone.

Milky Way (core visible 9:30pm until ?)

    • Use a sturdy tripod and a wide, fast lens—approximately 14–24mm
    • Suggested starting point: Manual mode, f2.8 or f4, 10–15 seconds and ISO 3200–6400.
    • Focus manually on a bright star, then avoid touching the focus ring.
    • Shoot RAW and turn off Long Exposure Noise Reduction so the camera does not pause between frames.
    • Try both horizontal and vertical compositions using the pier to shoreline for foreground elements.

    Helpful Extras

    • A  small flashlight or headlamp, preferably with a red-light mode will be helpful for settings after dark. Avoid shining lights toward other photographers or toward the photography subject once night shooting begins.
    • Bring lens cloths—humidity and sea spray may cause condensation.
    • Watch the weather closely and leave the beach immediately if lightning approaches.

New to Photography? Dont hesitate to ask for help with your camera settings We all started somewhere and weve been in your shoes.

Post Field Trip Zoom Meeting: Within a few days after the field trip, all registrants will receive an email invitation to a post-trip Zoom meeting. Instructions for uploading will be included.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Photography: New Special Interest Group!

We’re excited to announce the formation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) focused on Artificial Intelligence in Photography.

August Assignment: Choose one or more of the following options.

    1. Alternate Reality Challenge: Transform one of your own images into a completely different reality - same composition, new world.
e.g. Narnia, steampunk, post-apocalyptic, frozen ice age, futuristic city, underwater kingdom

    2. If This Scene Were... (Complete the sentence.)
e.g. painted by Monet, a Ghibli film, an Art Deco poster, National Geographic cover, illuminated fantasy novel

    3. AI Restraint Challenge: The opposite of "go crazy." Can you edit so subtly no one's sure AI was used?
e.g. enhance atmosphere, improve light, remove distractions

    4. Famous Movie Set: Turn your image into a scene from an imaginary film (inspired by, not copied).
e.g. Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner, Jurassic Park

    Upload your monthly assignment here.

    View submitted assignments here.

AI tools are rapidly evolving and becoming part of many photographers’ workflows in the following ways:

    • Image enhancement
    • Creative exploration
    • Workflow efficiency
    • Artistic experimentation

This group will provide a space to explore these tools thoughtfully, share knowledge, discuss ethical considerations, and learn together in a supportive environment.

Whether you’re simply curious about AI, already experimenting with it, or interested in understanding how it fits within our competition guidelines, this group is for you.

Edit My Photo – Fresh Eyes, Fresh Ideas

    • Ever wondered how another photographer would edit one of your images?

Here's your chance to find out—and to return the favor.

For this Edit My Photo workshop, participants will submit one or two unedited RAW images. Each participant will then be randomly assigned another member's image to edit using their own creative vision and workflow.

Editing someone else's photograph is a unique learning experience. Without the memory of the scene or an emotional attachment to the image, you're free to focus on its creative possibilities. Just as valuable is seeing how another photographer interprets one of your images. You'll quickly discover there is rarely one "right" edit—only different artistic visions.  Whether you're looking for fresh ideas, want to improve your post-processing skills, or simply enjoy seeing how others approach the same image, you'll leave with new techniques and creative inspiration.

      How It Works

      • By Friday, August 14 Upload one unedited RAW image here
      • Saturday, August 15 – Each submitted image will be randomly assigned to another participant.
      • By Wednesday, August 19 Upload your finished version(s) here
      • Thursday, August 20 – 6:30 PM – Join the live Zoom work) shop (link below)
        • During the live session, original and edited versions of each image will be shown online and the participant who edited the image will discuss their editing process and compare their interpretation with the original.
    • Preparing Your Files
    • Please rename each RAW file as:

    ·       LastName_FirstName_Title (optional)
    ·       Example: Brady_Jim_MorningMist.NEF

    Who Should Participate?

This workshop is open to photographers of all experience levels. If you've ever wanted to:

    • See your image through someone else's eyes
    • Learn new editing techniques
    • Challenge yourself with a different photographer's work
    • Pick up fresh ideas for Lightroom or Photoshop

Participation is limited to 12 members, so register early if you'd like to take part.

    Topic: The Critique
You know how your camera works. You've learned how to shoot and edit your photographs. This program explores the critique, the essential next stage in a photograph's lifecycle that prepares you for presentation. The Critique is a step-by-step approach to assessing the strengths and weaknesses an image possesses, and, more importantly, how to determine the weight of each, leading to how you can use that information in order to improve your craft. You want to succeed as a photographer, and this program will be instrumental in turning your question marks into periods, so that you can step confidently into the next contest or gallery show with your finest work.

    About Darin

A native of Melbourne, Florida, Darin Heinz first picked up a camera, his father's Nikon FM, without permission, at age 6 and promptly shot a whole roll of Kodachrome on out-of-focus views of the home office. Discovering the transgression two weeks later, his dad confronted him about it, and gave him a choice: 1977-style corporal punishment, or a rigorous education in how to properly use the thing. Choosing the latter, it turned out to be a life sentence.

In his high school photography class, Darin turned heads with his unorthodox composition and experimental darkroom techniques. Later, as an undergraduate at Virginia Commonwealth University, expanded his knowledge with 4x5 and studio lighting, and having turned many more heads as a finalist in several student shows, was tapped to serve as a juror in a half-dozen exhibitions. After graduating with a BS in Psychology and minors in Photography, Mass Communication, and Anthropology, he joined ASMP and founded Heinzfoto, a commercial photography studio in Richmond specializing in imagery for global advertising campaigns, exploiting his unique combination of academic disciplines.
After 9/11 (and a few personal setbacks), Darin returned to Melbourne; the relatively cooler commercial photography climate in his hometown allowed him to shift focus more onto creating fine art, conducting workshops, judging competitions. He joined the Camera Club of Brevard and quickly took a seat on the Board of Directors, holding the vice-president's role for several years, until relocating to Tampa.
In 2020, Darin became a member of PPA and the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association (TAPPA), and joined TAPPA's Board of Directors shortly afterward, eventually serving as the organization's president in 2024 and 2025.

Today, he is still on TAPPA's Board of Directors, and is currently working to reestablish ASMP's presence in the area, while offering one-on-one consulting services to photographers at all experience levels, as well as continuing his practice in the fashion and advertising worlds, using various film formats, Nikon digital cameras, and, from time to time, still shoots with the Nikon FM that started his adventure.

    The Theme is "Fall Season"

    • This theme invites you to celebrate the colors, textures, and moods of autumn. Think beyond just foliage-capture the crisp air, golden light, and seasonal traditions. Look for landscapes painted with reds, oranges, and yellows; close-ups of fallen leaves, acorns, or pumpkins; reflections of autumn hues in water; or wildlife preparing for the colder months. People enjoying fall activities-like apple picking, cozy gatherings, or walking through fallen leaves-can also tell the story. Whether subtle details or sweeping vistas, aim to showcase what makes the fall season distinctive and meaningful..

Upload your image before 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 4.

We have a new competition software/site! One-time registration is required.

Registered: If you are already registered with the new competition software/site at pixoroo.com, click here to submit your Digital Image of the Month photo.

    • Scoring by judges will be on a 20-point scale:  19-20 Excellent; 16-18 Stands Out; 13-15 Meets many criteria; 10-12 Meets some criteria; 6-9 Meets few criteria; 1-5 Missed the mark.

6:30 pm: General Meeting with Guest Speaker Joe Edelman

    Topic The Photographer's AI Advantage

Note: This is an in-person meeting and Joe will be presenting live via Zoom.

    AI for photographers?

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere right now, and photographers are hearing a lot of noise about it.

Some people claim AI will replace photographers.
Others think using AI is cheating.
Many photographers are simply confused about what it actually means for them.

    The truth is much simpler.

Artificial Intelligence is not a replacement for photographers.

It is one of the most powerful thinking and learning tools photographers have ever had.

In this eye-opening presentation, internationally known photographer and educator Joe Edelman shows photographers how AI can be used to learn faster, plan better shoots, and improve their photography.
This is not a presentation about letting a computer create your images.

It is about using AI as a practical tool to help photographers become more thoughtful, more prepared, and more creative.
During this presentation you will discover how AI can help photographers:

    • Learn photography concepts faster and understand techniques more clearly
    • Brainstorm creative ideas and develop new shoot concepts
    • Plan shoots more effectively with better preparation
    • Research cameras, lenses, lighting gear, and supplies more efficiently
    • Analyze photographs and receive constructive feedback for improvement
    • Re-imagine images to explore new creative possibilities

Most photographers are either ignoring AI completely or using it in ways that do very little to improve their photography.

This presentation shows photographers how to use AI as a thinking partner, not a shortcut, so they can grow faster, experiment more, and push their creativity further.

Whether you are curious, skeptical, or already experimenting with AI tools, this presentation will give you practical ways to take advantage of this powerful technology while keeping your photography authentic and uniquely your own.
    Learning Objectives

    Participants will learn how to:

    • Use AI as a powerful photography learning resource
    • Use AI to brainstorm and develop creative photography ideas
    • • Use AI to plan shoots and lighting setups
    • Use AI to research gear and equipment decisions
    • Use AI to evaluate photographs and identify improvements
    • Use AI to explore alternate creative directions for their images

    • Stumped by all the auto-focus options and menus?
    • Wondering what the best lens solution is for any given genre?
    • Looking for a specific how-to tutorial on one or more aspects of the camera?
    • Interested in pixel shift, Wi-Fi transfer, tethering, back button focus, etc.?

Via our upcoming Zoom meetings, the new Sony Uses Group Forum, and photo shoot outings, we will work together to bring these and any other topic into the discussion – AND SOLVE THEM!
