Topic: A Photographer's Approach to Color Magic
Color is all around us but often falls short of our expectations in the images we capture and share. The magic is missing. Despite what we’re often taught, our brains care less about absolute color fidelity and much more about color relationships. This is part of the conundrum surrounding the art and science of color.
Understanding and using color effectively is difficult.
This presentation seeks to better understand light, color, and how we see differently than our camera sensors. We will discuss key colors, harmonies, harmonics, color spaces and the digital process that impact our work. There are photographic and artistic strategies such as color grading and the effective use of saturation to help recapture some of the magic that prompted us to press the shutter.
Richard Tindell, Fine Art Photographer - Artist Statement
The first photograph that moved me was Devil’s Post Pile by Ansel Adams - I was twelve. Adams spent hours teasing his vision from the negative. Exploring what I see though the viewfinder and being present throughout the experience of taking the picture, processing it, articulating its intent and creating the final print fills an emotional connection between art, craft and vision.
Modern cameras are superb light recording devices but the camera cannot select what is captured or how and most importantly, the camera has no feelings to share. Making the transition to digital after years of shooting film, I continue to be amazed by the limitless opportunities the digital darkroom provides.
All photographic images are colored by personal experience that can reveal the photographer’s values and provide a window into his heart and soul. I prefer to shoot landscapes and subjects in natural light. My images seek to reveal feelings, memories and impressions of the wonder filled world that I explore; to move beyond just looking to seeing and perceiving.
Bio:
Richard Tindell is a photographer, author, lecturer, teacher and landscape architect.
He started shooting photographs in the early 70s and, like most landscape architects, his camera exceeded both his ability and his needs. Photography was a tool to document and record the environment and to create images of proposed projects, gardens that were imagined and yet to be built.
Trips resulted in more pictures of plants and paving and fountains than family (a shortcoming that has been rectified). His photos have appeared in several publications and on magazine covers.
For over 24 years, Richard was an adjunct professor of landscape design at Broward College and served as an instructor and speaker for the National Garden Club and other organizations. He has also presented at camera clubs across the state. In 2005 Richard moved to Naples taking the opportunity to partner with his friend and mentor, Jack Lieber.
A 30 years delayed honeymoon to Tuscany reawakened the joy of making images for fun and a new direction in photography. He is enjoying the adventure with his wife, Susan. His children and grandchildren are tolerant of the ever-present camera in his hands.
Richard is President of the Florida Camera Club Council and is active in DPI-SIG, the Naples Digital Photography Club, as a presenter, former Director of Competition, Director of the Photoshop Users Group and the Beginners Workshop. He has served as a judge of photographic competitions locally, state wide and internationally. He teaches photography, composition and post processing to small groups and individuals as well as in formal classroom settings.
Richard is a graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago; he moved to Florida after military service.
