Topic: The Three Pillars of Powerful Portraits
Those who are the best in their field have one very common attribute in their approach: Mastery of the Fundamentals. I call this “Brilliant on the Basics.” Almost anything can be broken down to its more basic parts.
In portraiture, the entirety of the process of preparing, shooting, and post processing can also be broken down into the most basic parts. Too many times, we get lost in a sea of tiny MICRO actions and loose site of the bigger picture (You know, you can’t see the forest because of the trees concept).
Great portraiture fundamentals can be boiled down to the three MACRO things (PILLARS) that really matter.
- Accurate Flow of Light
- Correct Exposure on the Subject
- Logical and Visually Appealing Composition
There is no question that today’s portrait masters have a significant number of steps and processes they follow to get the result they are striving for. But most of the time, these “micro” steps can be placed into a smaller number of logical macro steps. Doing this helps make complex processes easier to understand and learn.
