The famous Gatorland Bird Rookery was created in 1991 as an alligator breeding marsh. This unique habitat has grown into one of the largest and most accessible wading bird rookeries in Florida. Today, this area provides protected nesting, foraging, and roosting area to over 20 different species of birds, many of which are listed as Endangered or Species of Special Concern.
Gatorland’s boardwalks provide birders and photographers with close access to these incredible birds, allowing people to safely observe them and capture stunning photographs. You’ll see Cattle Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons, Anhingas, Cormorants, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and maybe even a Spoonbill.
During nesting season, Gatorland’s true beauty shines through the Breeding Marsh, which is also a natural bird rookery. It’s a feast for the eyes in early spring as birds from all over arrive to the warmer weather and enjoy the protection the alligators provide. They can nest in peace knowing predators are unlikely to come too close with alligators nearby.
Gatorland also has two Florida Panthers, Parrots, Macaws, Cockatoos, free-flight Aviary, great horned own, Emu, Flamingos, Wood Storks, giant tortoises (one 100 years old - 500 lbs).
Get ready for down-home family fun at “The Alligator Capital of the World®” – Gatorland! There isn’t a better place to see alligators and crocodiles of all sizes, from babies, also known as grunts, to the 14-foot monsters that call our Breeding Marsh home. We even have the largest collection of extremely rare white leucistic alligators. But, Gatorland is more than just a gator park! Our free-flight aviary, petting zoo, one-of-a-kind animal shows, thrilling Screamin’ Gator Zip Line and new Stompin’ Gator Off-Road Adventure ensure your day will be chock-full of fun, smiles and special memories!
