Black Skimmer Chicks on North Lido Beach (should be hatched), Sunset, Moonrise and Beach scenes: Due to popular demand, a 2nd outing is being offered, one day prior to the original

When: Saturday, May 30, 2026 7 PM (Sunset 8:20 PM, 295.3 deg, the near full moon will rise at 8:06 PM, 119.8 deg)

Where: North Lido, at the end of Ringling Parkway, Sarasota. See parking and nesting location on map. Meet at the star.

What: Join us on a birding photo shoot at North Lido Beach. Due to sensitive nature of the nesting area, registration is limited to 10. If full, add your name to the wait list for cancellations.

What to Expect: The black skimmers are laying their eggs now and the chicks should be hatching by the end of May. The nesting area is just north of the beach access. While there, don't miss sunset (8:20 PM) and the full moon rise (9:01 PM) Meet by the roped-off area (see star on location map)

Please join us at your own risk.  The Lakewood Ranch Digital Photography Club is not liable for any injury or damage resulting from participation in this event.  Let's be careful out there!

Parking: The meters in the lot and along Ben Franklin Drive accept credit cards or the ParkMobilapp. Parking is $1/hr in the lot outlined on the map or along Ben Franklin Dr (except at pavilion, where it is free). The closest restrooms are located at the pavilion, about .5 miles to the south.

Walking Distances: Short walk from the parking area to the beach.

Recommended Equipment:

Long lens for chicks and adult skimmers
Blanket to sit or lay on for an eye to eye shot,
Tripod
Tethered or remote trigger
Sun hat and sunscreen
Water
A little handheld brush to brush off sand on the camera bag and you before entering the car after the shoot.

Key Ethical Guidelines for Florida Beaches

Respect roped-off nesting areas and give birds plenty of space.

Stay at least 25 yards away from nesting birds and chicks. Disturbing parents can leave chicks exposed to predators and dangerous temperatures.

Avoid standing between nests and the shoreline, which can block chicks from reaching feeding areas. Chicks need frequent feeding to gain strength for migration. If chicks are feeding near the water, keep your distance so they don’t retreat to the dunes.

When sharing shorebird or seabird photos and videos, include captions explaining how you protected the birds’ space and wellbeing. Ethical photography helps set a positive example.

Contingency: In the case of inclement weather or if the chicks have not hatched, we will contact you by 6pm on Saturday, May 30.

New to Photography? Don’t hesitate to ask for help with camera settings—we all started somewhere and we’ve been in your shoes.

The Theme is "On the Water"

Water is the stage-whether it's calm reflections, crashing waves, or human activity. Boats at rest or in motion, wildlife skimming the surface, shimmering reflections, or landscapes where rivers, lakes, or oceans dominate the scene. From action to stillness, water should be the central theme.

Upload your image before 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 3.

We have a new competition software/site! One-time registration is required.

Registered: If you are already registered with the new competition software/site at pixoroo.com, click here to submit your Digital Image of the Month photo.

Not Registered: If you have NOT yet registered with the new competition software/site at pixoroo.com, click here for registration information. Note: you will only have to register one time.

Submittal requirements are as follows:

One image per member.
Digital image file:
- High quality JPG or PNG file.
- 1920 x 1080px is the recommended miniumum size..
- Quality setting: 85+ in Lightroom, high in Photoshop, or similar in other programs.
- Color Space: sRGB
- 2 Mb maximum file size.
Criteria judged will be the overall impact, composition of elements, technical aspects, and adherence to the theme. It is important to keep the theme in mind when choosing your image.
Scoring by judges will be on a 20-point scale: 19-20 Excellent; 16-18 Stands Out; 13-15 Meets many criteria; 10-12 Meets some criteria; 6-9 Meets few criteria; 1-5 Missed the mark.
The file name is your image title. Make sure the title reflects your image, and does not contain your name or anything else that identifies you as the maker. Choose a title carefully. A good title will complement the image.

Share Your Work Submittal

Submit up to three photos each month to be included in a slide presentation that will be shown at the next General Meeting and on the club's SmugMug site. Photos can be about any subject.

Submit Share Your Work images from your computer.

Submit Share Your work images from your phone or tablet.

Any submissions received late will automatically be carried over to the following month.

Registration is not required. Just click on the link above to submit your photos.

Each member is allowed to send up to 3 photos and/or a short video each month. Those photos and/or video can be on any subject as this is a great way to let other members see what kind of photography interests you, and what you have been shooting during the past month.

Please try to adjust your photos to at least 1920 pixels on the horizontal edge, if you can. If you are not sure how to do that just send them anyway. If there is a problem with their size, Dave Kurshan will let you know and walk you through the process of how to resize your photos.

Lance will discuss his work as a lifelong photojournalist and his journey back to film photography, darkroom work, and teaching his craft to new photographers.

Instructor Bio:

Lance Rothstein is a native Floridian with 30 years experience in photojournalism. His clients have included The New York Times, The Miami Herald, Sports Illustrated, and Aftenposten Norway.
At Florida State University he studied Studio Art under photographers George Blakely, Robert Fichter, and Mary Jo Toles, and took additional workshops with Jerry Uelsmann, Donna Ferrato, James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado and Gordon Parks.

Lance was photo editor for FSView News and was a staff photographer at the Vero Beach Press-Journal, The Ft. Pierce Tribune, The Tampa Bay Times, and The Tampa Tribune. After decades at Florida newspapers, Lance moved with his wife to Belgium and worked for numerous companies throughout Europe for six years.

Back in Florida and now living in Clearwater, he freelances for various outlets, runs Sunshine Darkroom, specializes in film & darkroom photography, and teaches photographic workshops in Florida and New Orleans.

"What would you do?": Be part of reviewing and giving constructive feedback on unedited photos. What works in the photo; How can the photo be improved either by composition/editing; and what could be done differently next time. After the discussion, the photographer shares the edited photo. All attending are encouraged to bring their photos to be part to the "What would you do?" discussion.

Learn how to use your smartphone camera and when it may be the best camera for certain situations.
Explore camera settings and strategies used to capture sunsets, portraits, Macro.....

We’re excited to announce the formation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) focused on Artificial Intelligence in Photography.

The Videography Group's purpose is to educate members in the art of videography for the purpose of complementing still images or producing stand alone videos to document an event or occasion. No previous training is necessary.

The Videography Meetings involve presentations on some aspect of Videography that will assist members to enhance their skills at planning, producing and editing videos. All skill levels are welcome.

Short videos filmed by participants are presented and critiqued to help with the learning process. Equipment information and techniques are shared and a very informal and helpful environment lends to helping everyone improve their skill level

The Theme is "Summertime Fun"

Show the joy and energy of summer. Think beach days, picnics, outdoor festivals, water play, or kids running through sprinklers. Look for vibrant colors, movement, and light that conveys carefree days, and warm evenings filled with laughter and adventure. Think warmth, energy, and playfulness-the little joys that define summer living.

Upload your image before 5:00 pm on Wednesday, July 8.

We have a new competition software/site! One-time registration is required.

Submittal requirements are as follows:

One image per member.
Digital image file:
- High quality JPG or PNG file.
- 1920 x 1080px is the recommended miniumum size..
- Quality setting: 85+ in Lightroom, high in Photoshop, or similar in other programs.
- Color Space: sRGB
- 2 Mb maximum file size.
Criteria judged will be the overall impact, composition of elements, technical aspects, and adherence to the theme. It is important to keep the theme in mind when choosing your image.
Scoring by judges will be on a 20-point scale: 19-20 Excellent; 16-18 Stands Out; 13-15 Meets many criteria; 10-12 Meets some criteria; 6-9 Meets few criteria; 1-5 Missed the mark.
The file name is your image title. Make sure the title reflects your image, and does not contain your name or anything else that identifies you as the maker. Choose a title carefully. A good title will complement the image.
Challenge yourself and have fun.

In this live demonstration, Pamela Parmenter will show how a single light source can create powerful, painterly low-key portraits filled with depth, drama, and emotion.

Using simple materials-mylar paper for reflection, flowing fabric, a dark backdrop, and one carefully placed continuous light - Pamela will demonstrate how to sculpt the human form, shape fabric with highlights and shadow, and create movement that transforms a portrait into

fine art.

How one light can create dramatic low-key imagery

Using shadow intentionally to sculpt the body

Lighting fabric to reveal folds, texture, and dimensional depth

Creating reflective surfaces with mylar for visual impact

Directing movement for dynamic compositions

The artistry of patterns can be bold and graphic or subtle and intricate. Your challenge is to frame them in a way that feels both natural and visually striking. Show how nature organizes itself into stunning and surprising visual harmony.

The Videography Meetings involve presentations on some aspect of Videography that will assist members to enhance their skills at planning, producing and editing videos. All skill levels are welcome.

Short videos filmed by participants are presented and critiqued to help with the learning process. Equipment information and techniques are shared and a very informal and helpful environment lends to helping everyone improve their skill level

Topic: Simple Truths To Building A Strong Photography Portfolio

Having a strong and engaging portfolio is crucial in the world of photography. It is your primary tool for showing your abilities, style, and unique approach to making photos.

Focus on the type of imagery that you believe will make you stand out from the competition.
A good portfolio is not a mishmash of photos taken over a couple of years and cobbled together.
Take your time, your portfolio should show consistency from image to image and show of your style.
When you are photographing, take as many different approaches to the subject as you can.

photography career in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. Returned to Erie, Pennsylvania from 1989 to 2013 then relocated to St Petersburg, Florida in 2014 for blue skies and sunshine.
